Back in the day, gearheads had to wait weeks, sometimes even months, for the go-fast parts they ordered over the phone to arrive in their mail box. While today’s shipping processes have been streamlined, it can still seem like forever-and-a-day for those much-anticipated packages to finally in our garages.
There’s a faster way though, and it comes in the form of a 1978 UPS delivery truck chopped, dropped, and powered by a 500 horsepower Super High Output V8 engine. SPEED TV’s American Trucker caught up with Mike Lucky, the owner of this damn-fast delivery vehicle.
The United Parcels Service has actually been around since 1907, when it was originally known as the American Messenger Company. It didn’t become UPS until 1919, and since the 1960’s they’ve used essentially the same trucks to deliver packages across the country. These trucks have no heating, air conditioning, or radio, and feature a manual transmission (as to keep prices down.) There’s nothing special about these trucks…until you drop a 500 horsepower engine into one.
This alcohol-powered UPS hot rod is more than just a motor though, as its got big Baer brakes, a modern suspension, and has been completely customized front to back. But it’s the little details that help set this truck apart from the pack, like the sliding driver’s door and all the little chrome bits. It’s an awesome departure from standard hot rod flair, and we wouldn’t mind getting our car parts delivered in this rod. Who knows, maybe they might even arrive on time!
