Hey kids! What time is it? If you guessed “Hump Day Holeshot Time,” you deserve a cookie. Go ahead, treat yourself. This week’s Hump Day Holeshot is enough to make you want to rethink that mini-tub kit. Running on 10.5-inch Hoosier radials, this gnarly ’69 Chevelle gets up and snaps off 9-second 1320 passes with the greatest of ease.
Powered by a monster 555cui big block Chevy topped with Dart Pro1 heads (sporting “a little work”) and pump gas-friendly 10.50:1 ceramic coated pistons with gas ported rings. The top end is capped with a gasket-matched Super Victor manifold. The engine was built by JA Performance out of Long Island, NY. The transmission is a Select TH400 with a full manual reverse valve body, a 9-inch 5,800-stall converter with a pro brake, a 4-inch dia. chromoly driveshaft, a stout Strange 9-inch rear with an aluminum Ultra section, Strange spool spinning 4.11 gears and gun-drilled axles. Strange coil overs in the back and Moroso Trick Springs up front.
As the owner attests, it’s a simple package but gets it done.
Unfortunately, this second video, while from a better angle to see this A-Body leap up on its haunches, cuts out in the final two seconds before we can see the boards light up with the claimed 9.48-second pass. Nonetheless, the Chevelle’s hard launch and continual pulling down the strip are a good hint that the mid-9 time is legit. Take a look and decide for yourself:
