What? Dodge Builds Pontiac Excitement? Easy Mopar and Pontiac peeps, it’s not what it seems. Automotive News scribe Richard Truett came up with an interesting premise and even more intriguing headline. Now that Pontiac is six years gone, GM CEO Marry Barra recently mentioned that she doesn’t miss the marque and there are no plans to resurrect any of GM’s other jettisoned brands including Hummer, Saab and Saturn. At least not while she’s at the helm.
Meanwhile Autoweek suggests GM’s actions (or inaction) position Dodge in Pontiac’s old niche. Given that Pontiac was GM’s “Excitement” division and Dodge now has its most exciting lineup in decades, the premise that the performance Mopar division would be a repository for displaced Pontiac customers isn’t as farfetched as it seems.
“Dodge is the American performance brand,” Tim Kuniskis boasted during a presentation of Fiat Chrysler’s new five-year plan in May. Kuniskis, CEO of Dodge, has trimmed the Avenger from the lineup, with the Caravan minivan soon to follow. Leaving only “Exciting” Mopars.
GM isn’t voluntarily surrendering any sales that’s for sure. There are many extremely competent models from GM to take up the slack. Chevy SS, Camaro and Corvette not to mention the Cadillac ATS/CTS V-Series Cars. GM says it’s in regular communication with old Pontiac customers as well.
The euthanization of Pontiac was a painful episode for sure. The last model that rolled off the assembly lines was a dowdy G6 sedan. A horrifying end to a fantastic run. So for the Pontiac faithful, move along folks, nothing to see here…Maybe a new CEO will change things and at the rate GM goes through ‘em, who knows? Maybe we’ll hear some happy Poncho news in the future.
