Jeep is an American icon, the little truck that won the War (WWII). And while we are mostly performance enthusiasts, we can appreciate a good mudder or rock crawler, which is where most Jeeps shine. But some Jeep owners also have a passion for performance, and while the ol’ 4.0 liter might not be much of a performer, the big engine bays lend themselves well to V8 conversions.
So we’re not too surprised that Bangshift found a supercharged, 1,500 horsepower, alcohol-injected 468 big block Chevy motor under the hood of a Jeep vehicle. What raised our eyebrows though was that it wasn’t a Wrangler or CJ7, but a Jeep Cherokee with this wild engine.
The Cherokee has its own devoted following, and there have been plenty of engine swaps within that crowd. But while we’ve seen drag racing Wranglers with 1,000 horsepower HEMI engines before, we’ve never seen a Jeep Cherokee all decked out for some serious drag racing. From the 1,500 horsepower engine to the 7:30 rear end gears and full tube chassis and massive, meaty slicks, this Jeep was built for one thing, and one thing only; sand drag racing.
The seller claims a best time of 3.71 in 300 ft of sand, but we don’t imagine it’d take too much to convert this into a drag strip kinda car. What’s more, the body looks like it hasn’t been touched (except for that cute spoiler and hoodscoop.) It is quite the contraption, and best of all, its up for sale on RacingJunk.com for just $9,500. The motor alone is probably worth that. Hard to beat that kind of bargain.
