Killer Kong Project Mini Update: Tapping Into Some Mopar Inspiration

We know how project cars can hit a lull every now and again. It’s not for the sake of not caring or even being lazy, sometimes life just gets in the way. It’s distractions like these that slow down work, divert us from heading out the garage early Saturday mornings and just getting work done. For us and our awesome ’69 Dodge Charger, it’s been the waiting game; waiting for funds to fill back up and new parts to arrive, mainly.

This '66 Dodge A-100 van was built by Matt Graves & Jon Clark for the 2010 Hot Rod Power Tour, and formed the basis for their yet-to-be completed site, VanJockey.com.

But recently, we got a really nice shot in the arm from our friend Jason R. Sakurai at Roadhouse Marketing. Jason’s life has been a pretty impressive one – particularly for a car guy – from a district manager for Pontiac to working as an advertising executive for two magazines, and later founding Roadhouse Marketing.

Right now, Jason handles sales and marketing for Stacey David’s GearZ on the Speed Channel, as well as for the upcoming Snake And Mongoose motion picture from Rhino Films. Oh yeah, when he’s not doing all of that, he also “dabbles” in doing project car renderings.

Jason hit us up a couple weeks ago, wanting to do something for Killer Kong. Seeing that our HEMI Charger is gaining some pretty strong momentum, we said, “Sure!” and waited to see what he came up with.

We had mentioned in earlier updates that Kong’s inspiration came directly from Dodge drag racing pioneer Dick Landy and his successful trio of Second Generation Chargers. Landy lead the Super Stock field for Dodge back in the late 1960’s and on through the 1970’s, making innovative inroads which helped shape modern drag racing as well as popularize the brand.

Sure, it's not a photo-realistic depiction of our '69 Charger devouring the 1320, but it is a great little homage to our personal hero Dick Landy, and a nice little shot in the arm for our Killer Kong project. Landy's '68, '69 and '70 Chargers proved that big B-Body Mopars could hang with the likes of Grumpy's Camaros and all those bothersome Mustangs.

In fact, it was Landy’s ’70 Charger, specifically, that directly inspired our motivations with ‘Kong. Landy’s final Charger was shrouded in mystery for several years, with Landy forgetting his even had the car, until it was unearthed by an unsuspecting enthusiast who popped up on DodgeCharger.com wondering if the old ’70 Charger he had in his garage was worth anything.

Dick Landy and brother Mike had perfected their B-Body formula by 1970 and had applied all of their know-how to the 3900lbs. Dodge.

New for that year was Landy’s own creation, a pair of double spark plug-per-cylinder hemispherical heads. Nothing in the rulebooks outlawed the 16-plug HEMI and was, up until that moment, only an engineer’s idea on a drawing board.

Along with his murderous Mopar’s new double-plug elephant, were a bevy of small tweaks and changes that lightened, strengthened and improved the car from the ranks of street driver to quarter mile-monster.

While we shied away from acid dipping the front fenders, hood and bumper, while filling the rear bumper with lead, and modifying the transmission hub to accept both automatic and manual transmissions so we could bounce between classes with ease, we did replicate many of Landy’s tricks to gain a mild edge.

The original grainy image above is of Landy’s ’68 featured on the cover of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated long before many reading this were born. Jason took some creative liberties and inked this cool rendering of our T7 Bronze R/T Charger yanking the front skinnies just like Mr. Landy did for this shutterbug so long ago.

We have to thank Jason Sakurai and Roadhouse Marketing for drawing up this fun rendering of our project ’69 Charger, and promise to make this bit of fiction into a reality soon enough!
