Mecum Brings Record Sales at 2011 Grand Finale Auction in Missouri

Mecum Auctions is known for bringing impressive rides to auction blocks across the country and getting top dollar for them. This year’s Mecum auctions were no different and the company went out with a major bang at their 2011 grand finale auction in Kansas City, Missouri last weekend. Not only did this event rake in over $12 million in sales, it also saw a record number of attendees and vehicles offered.

The grand finale auction took place from December 1st through the 3rd at the Kansas City Convention Center/ Bartle Hall. With over 800 vehicles offered, this year’s event was bigger than any previous Kansas City Auction. Of the 800 cars that crossed the auction block, 70 percent were sold through to new owners, generating sales of $12.3 million including the buyer’s premium or $11.6 million without it.

The top four sellers at the Kansas City Auction were impressive both in quality and in selling price.

The turnout and sales generated weren’t the only impressive things, however. So were the cars. A rare ’69 4-speed Shelby Mustang GT500 convertible finished in Gulfstream Aqua paint with a 428cui engine was the top seller, bringing in $165,000. Rounding out the top four cars was a real ‘70 V code Six Pack Superbird that sold for $122,500, a brand new ‘67 Mustang resto mod with 700hp that sold for $121,000 and a fully optioned and restored ‘53 Buick Skylark that sold for $120,000. The cars with the top ten final price tags included a ‘56 Thunderbird, ‘70 Mustang Boss 302, ‘65 Corvette convertible, ‘69 Camaro resto mod and Z28, and a ‘58 Chrysler Imperial Crown convertible.

While the 2011 year of selling is over for Mecum, the company won’t be taking much of a break before they start up their 2012 auctions. The first Mecum auction of the new year will take place in Kissimmee, Florida on January 24th through the 29th. Be sure to stay tuned to the Mecum InfoNet for a closer look at the cars that will be auctioned off at future events as they are posted.
