Military-Spec Chrysler 361 Engine Found Still In Crate

We found this really cool eBay auction of a military spec 361 Chrysler engine that was still in the crate. Apparently it’s been in storage for over 40 years, and it’s still intact. We know it’s not a HEMI, but it is still a cool find because it’s an interesting piece of Mopar history, just the fact that it has never been touched gives it a certain wow factor.

The conventional 361 engine Chrysler offered was in the same engine family as the 383, 413, and the 440, and was put into Chrysler’s intermediate bodies during the early- to mid-sixties.

A couple of strange things about this engine is that the intake manifold bolts are vertical instead of going diagonally into the cylinder heads, probably what made it fit only military applications.

According to the eBay auction the engine is being sold for parts only as the owner cannot guarantee that it runs. It appears that this 361 was originally intended for the military’s armored vehicle called the V-100 Commando, an armored transport vehicle used for transporting troops through rough terrain, and used for clearing the way so foot soldiers could march safely and avoid ambush.

By the end of the auction the engine had sold for a mere $234.37, not a bad buy for a piece of history. We’re thinking no one wanted to take the risk of possibly buying a seized engine, or not being able to use the engine in the car due to the fact that differed so much from the conventional 361 Chrysler produced. It’s still pretty cool though to see that things like this still exist and it lets us know that there are still hidden treasures out there.
