Production Of Right-Hand Drive Mustang Begins For Export Markets

The Ford Mustang was a critical and sales hit right from day one, and it took less than one full model year for the first million to be built and sold. For a variety of reasons (not all of which we’re privy to), Ford opted to keep Mustang sales restricted to North America, never building a right-hand drive model for markets like the UK and Australia.

That all changes this year though, as the sixth-generation Mustang becomes the first of its kind to be offer a right-hand drive model for export. Production of the right-hand drive Mustangs began in earnest last week at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant, with almost 3,000 workers assembling Mustangs in two shifts to export to the first 2,000 buyers in the UK. It’s also worth noting that 80% of UK Mustang buyers opted for the 435 horsepower 5.0 V8 rather than the fuel-sipping EcoBoost four-cylinder.

The Flat Rock Assembly Plant where the sixth-generation Mustang is built also produces the current Ford Fusion for North America, having been recently overhauled as part of a $555 million expansion to allow multiple, distinct models to be built side-by-side. While UK buyers are at the top of the list for right-hand drive Mustangs, Ford has plans to import its wrong-sided pony car to 25 other markets, including Australia, South Africa, Japan, and New Zealand.

For decades, the only way to get a Mustang in these countries was to import one at great cost. Instead Ford offered models like the Focus RS in the UK and the Falcon X6 in Australia in lieu of the Mustang, offering a diverse performance lineup.
