Pure Punishment: A Custom ’70 Dodge Charger With Modern Technology

We all love the classic design of muscle cars from the 60’s and 70’s, but classic cars have hard time keeping up with today’s technology and are more apt to be seen at local car shows and cruises than on the road with rest of us day to day.

[3]So what do you do when you love the looks of your classic car, but you need the refinements of modern technology to get you around? You do what Dave Salvaggio of Salvaggio Automotive Design in Milwaukee, WI, is doing to a customer’s 1970 Dodge Charger.

You rebuild it from the ground up, and modernize it with the latest suspension and drive train technology, as seen on the DodgeCharger.com [4] forum.

Based on a rendering by Sean Smith Designs [5], “Punishment” is going to be a charcoal metallic masterpiece that incorporates such subtle treats as a pair of mirrors and door handles from a 1970 Dodge Challenger, and a tail lamp assembly from a modern Dodge Challenger incorporated into the rear body panel.

The interior will be fully custom, including a set of gauges from Auto Meter’s Custom Shop where you can custom design your instruments with many different colors, face designs, trim, and pointer and numbering styles.

Up front is a custom, double-wishbone front suspension rolling on 18″ wheels with rack and pinion steering. Power will come from a modern 6.1L modified HEMI that will deliver an estimated 620 horsepower through a manual transmission to a custom four-link rear suspension.

The extra wide rear tires will be wrapped around 19″ wheels nestled inside tubbed wheel housings, and go-to-whoa power will come from 4-piston Wilwood Disc Brakes. “Punishment” is a better description for what it will be like to not drive this car.
