Among Shelby collectors there are only a handful of cars worth a million dollars. Those include unique rides like the Shelby Dragonsnake, or those cars belonging to Carroll Shelby himself. Then there are the 36 1966 Shelby GT350 R Mustangs. These purpose-built race cars that are each worth one-million dollars, give or take. At that kind of money, only a relatively few people can ever even dream of owning one.
That is unless you go the replica route. Hemmings Auto Blog reports that a replica ‘66 Shelby GT350 R is up for sale in their classified section. While the $87,000 price tag is nothing to scoff at, compared to the million-bucks a real one will cost you, it seems like a downright affordable price.
The seller claims that this replica was rebuilt to the exact same specifications as the original GT350 R, and that it is a consistent Top 5 finisher in Vintage Racing, with 11 races under its belt. It’s always good to see a race car being raced rather than just admired, and if we had to spend nearly $90,000 on a race car, it had better be a badass vintage ride like this one.
With a rumored 440 horsepower from its 289 cubic-inch racing engine, this 2,600 pound Mustang can scoot and corner with any number of vintage Corvettes or Cobras. The Toploader 4-speed manual would be a blast to shift in the heat of a vintage race, blipping the throttle and hearing the little 289 scream, we can only dream. The car even comes with its own trailer which includes a workbench, electric winch, and tire tracks to keep therace car in tip top shape on race weekends.
If we had $90,000 burning a hole in our pocket, we’d definitely consider blowing it on this GT350 R replica.
