Many people dream of owning a classic Mustang, but few are prepared for the maintenance that comes with owning an older car. Valves have to be lashed, carburetors can be finicky, and those old brakes don’t stop like modern cars too. What if you could have a car with classic looks but all the underpinnings of a modern car?
That is where Retrobuilt comes in. For several years they have offered a conversion package that makes any 2005+ Mustang look a lot like earlier Mustangs. Their latest creation is a package based on the 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible, giving you the safety, performance, and comfort of a modern car with retro styling.
The package requires any convertible Mustang made since 2005, and the kit itself starts at around $85,000. For that kind of scrilla you get all new fiberglass body panels (save the doors) along with all the corresponding chrome and trim bits. The result is a car that is clearly modern, but with even more retro looks than Ford gave us in 2005.
The styling may not be to everyone’s tastes, but considering the popularity of the Ford Mustang, it can be hard to stand out. Retrobuilt’s classic/modern conversion definitely stands out; whether or not that is a good thing is up to you. An optional Racing Package adds a supercharger, Baer brakes, and a lowered suspension, and that is always a good thing.
Retrobuilt’s GT500CS won’t be mistaken for anything else, that much is for sure.
