Silver 2016 Z06 is the First Chevy To Roll with Apple Car Play OS

Looks like the mobile OS war is headed to a dashboard near you. GM has announced it will offer Apple’s Car Play and Google’s Android Auto on a variety of its cars for the 2016 model year. For those already running MyLink you will be able to load the new software very soon.

We all know the drill. These in-car operating systems connect via bluetooth with an IPhone or Android handset allowing you to control your smart phone from the infotainment center in the dash or the redundant controls on the steering wheel. This setup allows you to access your music library or Pandora, Spotify and a host of other apps on your phone and allegedly decrease driver distraction and the same time.

The Corvette has been the tip of the technological spear for General Motors for years so it’s fitting that a very attractive silver Z06 just rolled off the line with the distinction of first GM car with factory installed Apple software. This will probably induce an orgasm from Apple fans while simultaneously eliciting a “meh” from the rest of population. Either way, it shows GM is going to leave no stone unturned when attracting buyers to their portfolio.

For Vette fans with Androids it gets murkier. Some of GM’s Chevrolet vehicles — such as the Malibu, Camaro and Silverado truck — use a seven-inch MyLink infotainment system; those systems will be compatible with both Android Auto and Apple Car Play in the beginning of 2016. Other GM vehicles (Corvette) use an eight-inch version of MyLink that will only be compatible with Apple Car Play at the beginning of the new model year. While development and testing is not yet complete, Android Auto compatibility may be available on the eight-inch version of MyLink later in the 2016 model year, GM said.

With MyLink, OnStar, Apple and Google battling it out for your attention, the winner here is the customer as he/she now has options of how they interface with their car’s infotainment system and smartphone.

Conspicuously absent is Microsoft which was a pioneer here and now AWOL. Remember Ford’s Sync?? The Redmond guys have a big roll out soon with Windows 10 and its claim to fame is a unified experience across all platforms running a single OS. Having a fully functioning, touch screen Windows PC in the dash would be compelling indeed.
