For years, one thing that has kept many hot rodders and muscle car guys from making those long treks is the low gas mileage they get. Let’s face it, we love to drive our cars but a full tank of gas increases the value of the car a lot more than it did 30 years ago. And our wallets get thinner with every fill up – which can sometimes be a couple times for a short trip to a car show that’s only an hour away.
Gear Vendors came on the scene back in 1979 when they became a licensed manufacturer for GKN, making improvements to their line of overdrives for Ford and Volvo. Today, Gear Vendors has bought out GKN’s overdrive division and all rights do the original designs; this means Gear Vendors has control over quality and production, something that is very significant and important to them.
If you think Gear Vendors sounds famiar, that’s probably because you’ve seen them at car shows or even at SEMA where they’ve won the Best Engineered award- twice. They are the leader in under and overdrive units for just about anything, from classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods, trucks, 4x4s, motorhomes and the list goes on. Thanks to their overdrive units, they have made it much more enjoyable (and affordable) for hot rodders and street rodders to make those two to three hour round trips in their hot rod instead of trading down to the family economy car.
Coverage for muscle cars and hot rods isn’t limited to just a few transmissions, either, which is a typical concern for many people. How many times have you wanted something for your muscle car and found that coverage was limited to only GM, or Ford? Gear Vendors doesn’t discriminate, their coverage for GM, Ford and Mopar includes all the popular automatic transmissions, and even some 4-speed manual transmissions.
What this does for all of us gearheads is that it will typically give us a 22-28% increase in fuel economy, just by adding a Gear Vendors Overdrive. Gear Vendors says that typically, anyone running a 3.42 to 4.10 gear ratio could see about 25% gain in economy at freeway speeds, and if you’re running a little boost on that V8 you could see an even better increase.
So keep an eye out for upcoming articles and information about Gear Vendors, and take a look around their site. Thanks to GV, many weekend warriors are able to drive their cars to the track, not just onto the trailer. Oh, and if you are wondering if your 700 horsepower small block is going to be an issue – no worries there. Some of their current customers are running more than 1200 horsepower, and Gear Vendors is happy to talk to you about any hydraulic changes that are needed for vehicles up to 2000 horsepower.
