For awhile there, it looked like the writing was on the wall for Chrysler. Only an 11th-hour intervention by Fiat saved Chrysler from impending liquidation, and even then some hard sacrifices had to be made. Among them was the Dodge Viper, which along with its ACR version had become the go-to track race car for many well-to-do Mopar fans.
Thankfully the Viper was reborn as the halo car for the SRT sub-brand, and according to CarBuzz there are rumors that a new ACR version is in the works. This track-focused Viper could debut as early as next year.
In case you’ve forgotten, the Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR was a roadgoing Viper with weekends at the racetrack in mind. There was an even hotter version, the ACR-X, though for now Chrysler engineers are focusing on an ACR version of the new SRT Viper. Word has it that bigger brakes, a new suspension, and a bevy of other track-oriented upgrades could be in the works.
Even more exciting though is the prospect of more power, to the tune of 90 extra ponies over the standard Viper. That would mean 730 horsepower on tap, though Chrysler has reportedly gone back to tire supplier Pirrelli in hopes of finding a better rubber solution. After all, not just any tire can withstand 730 horsepower, you know? Once the tire issue is sorted out, an SRT Viper ACR could bow as early as next year. We can’t hardly wait.
