Stolen 1966 Mustang Returns To Rightful Owner After 20 Years

Sometimes justice doesn’t come quickly, heck, sometimes justice doesn’t come at all. But for Betsey Montgomery, justice finally came some 20 years after her beloved 1966 Mustang was stolen from her home.  We’ve seen these stories before, but there is something about this particular case that really caught our eye.

You see Montgomery was a woman that loved her Ford Mustang that her father purchased from the original owner in 1973. For nearly 20 years she cherished the 1966 Mustang and made memory after memory in it. However in September of 1992, some low-life made off with her ride and many of her family thought it was gone forever. “What you have to understand about this car is that it was like another child in our family,” Linda Wade, Montgomery’s younger sister told USA Today. “When it was stolen, it was like someone had died.”

However, a random phone call in October of 2012 brought new hope to Betsy that she might see her Mustang again. A gentleman from the NICB(National Insurance Crime Bureau) had found her long lost Stang on a shipping container about to be shipped to a new owner in Australia. Only a short month later and the mustang was returned to the rightful owner.

For Montgomery seeing the car return to the rightful owner was extremely rewarding, “As they backed it off the ramp, I just started thinking about all the times me and my friends went riding in it,” she says. “My daddy teaching me to drive a stick shift in it. He worked at Colonial bakery and would drive us in the Mustang to get fresh, warm bread. Just moments like that came back to me in an instant.

Montgomery is taking everything in stride and has a great attitude about the years the mustang spent away from her. “But whoever owned it, and no matter how many times it changed hands, they took care of it,” she says. “I just wish it had one of those black boxes like an airplane so it could tell me where all it’s been.”

And she wasn’t kidding, only a few blemishes and scratches were visible when she took ownership of the car in November of 2012. She very rarely used it in 2013 and this year decided that it was time to take care of the small flaws that the car had. This week the car is scheduled to be delivered to Montgomery after a couple of months in a body shop.

Here’s hoping that she gets to make even more great memories behind the wheel of her Mustang.
