There’s an old saying about stereotypes holding a certain grain of truth, especially when it comes to cars and their drivers. For Americans and our muscle car, “common knowledge” has dictated that anything made in Detroit isn’t worth a crap in the corners. And maybe 25 years ago, that was true, but the Big Three have made big progress on the handling front.
It’s not every day you get to see a Dodge Challenger whipping through the cones on an autocross track, but Jalopnik stumbled across just such a video. BONUS! It’s an SRT8 392 Challenger, the crème de la crème of Challengers.
The Dodge Challenger is the heftiest of the Detroit muscle car trio, weighing in at well over 4,000 pounds. Even with 480 horsepower and 480 ft-lbs of torque on tap, motivating that big body is no small task. Yet to watch this Challenger bobbing and weaving through the cones of this autocross course, you’d think this hefty contender had gone on a serious diet, dropping 1,000 pounds over night. It could be thanks to the new-for-2011 suspension improvements.
All that low-end torque is a huge boon on the autocross course as well, allowing the Challenger to power out of the corners and accelerate much quicker than more-nimble-but-less-powerful cars. This particular Challenger is being driven by two Dodge engineers in the One Lap of America, and Red Letter Dodge reports that the pair finished second in the Big Bore class at this autocross event, with a time of 1 minute 55 seconds. You can follow the whole saga of this Challenger at Red Letter Dodge, or just watch this video again and wish it were you whipping through those cones.
