Have you ever heard of an Australian Holden Torana? Well, they aren’t much to get excited about. That is unless they’re highly modified and spitting out over 1,500hp like the one in this video we found on Car Scoop. So hold on to your hats boys and girls as we take a look at this magnificent beast of a car.
The Torana was an ordinary compact/mid-size car produced from 1967 to 1979 by Holden, the General Motors subsidiary in Australia. Powered originally by a single four-cylinder engine, Holden Toranas got more inline four and many inline six engine options starting with the second generation cars. It wasn’t until 1974 when the Torana was in its third generation that a V8 was finally added to the engine lineup, but it was short-lived. The V8 was discontinued in 1977 and the Torana took its last breath in 1979 while its four-cylinder version, named the Sunbird in 1976, only held on through 1980.
Needless to say, the Holden Torana was not something to write home about, performance or looks wise. But just like with any car, it is possible to make a Holden Torana powerful, and that’s exactly what Jake Edward did with his Holden you see in the video above.
This Torana isn’t sporting a stock engine by any stretch of the imagination. It has been equipped with a enormous 8.2L 496cui turbocharged Chevy V8, complete with a Motec computer and 16 injectors, that runs on straight methanol.
At this year’s Summernats Horsepower Heroes event in Australia, Edward’s Holden was invited to compete against other powerful machines in the invite-only competition to see who’s car could put down the most rear wheel horsepower.
Check out Edward’s two dynamometer pulls from the event in the video above and be prepared to be amazed. I think it’s safe to say that this Torana is anything but ordinary, putting down a remarkable 1,584.8rwhp.
