Video: 2015 Corvette Z06 Takes On 2014 Viper TA- Does It Seem Legit?

z-06Ever since we saw the battle of the Corvette and the Viper at Laguna Seca last year, the battle has continued to swell between the Bowtie crowd and the Pentastar gang. In the first major battle it was the ZR1 with its 638 horsepower that took out the Viper GTS with its 640 horsepower at Laguna Seca. The claim was that the Vette had the Viper by a full two seconds around the track with Randy Pobst piloting both cars.

Then SRT boss Ralph Gilles called out the comparison on Twitter, claiming that the Viper wasn’t driven to its potential, saying “Randy has always struggled with the Viper.” Gilles later followed that up claiming you can’t compare the production line Vette to the handmade Viper. But, boys will be boys and this kind of competitive spirit is what makes it all exciting. Soon afterwards, the Viper TA was announced in an obvious bid to take back Laguna Seca from the Corvette.

srt-viper-ta-3The Viper TA – for Time Attack – addressed the track manners of the Viper, giving it carbon fiber body and bracing components and an aero package that reportedly increases downforce by 700 percent at 150 mph. To this, the new supercharged Z06 was released, with 10 more horsepower than the 2014 Viper TA.

Comparisons from sites like GM Authority place the bout fairly even, but states that the Z06 has a couple of factors that hinder the C7 in this type of competition. They say the Z06 is heavier than the Viper, it has seven gears to the Viper’s six, and the Vette appears to have a Stage 2 or Stage 3 aerodynamic kit, affecting the supercharged Z06’s straight line performance. However, the Z06 does have 10 more horsepower and 50 more lb-ft of torque, yet the Viper pulled away on all seven bouts.

This leaves us with lots of questions about these two road race demons; we’ve seen both cars at the drag strip but these are completely stock, so is it a moot point? Some are claiming the driver in the Vette might lack the experience needed to pull this off. What would happen if the drivers switched cars?

We would rather they both hit Laguna Seca again – let’s see this competition at the track instead of on a public road. GM Authority does state that they feel when the eight-speed automatic appears the Viper will have a battle on its hands. You be the judge, for us… it’s all fun no matter who wins, but it does raise some eyebrows and makes for some great banter.
