Let’s get one thing straight right now; nobody is happy about the death of Pontiac. Obviously everybody knows that the “Tin Indian” brand has moved on to that big automotive resting place in the sky, but a lot of people don’t know that 2011 would’ve been Pontiac’s 85th anniversary, had they still been with us to celebrate it.
Although the brand’s life came to an abrupt conclusion at the end of 2009, there’s no denying the impact that the Pontiac Motor Division had left on the automotive marketplace. Throughout its lifespan, from the original Pontiac model of the Oakland division from 1926, to the G8 GXP of 2009, and everything in between, Pontiac always offered a car for both the masses and the enthusiast.
Just the other day, we stumbled upon a video on YouTube that a Pontiac fan created showing small clips and still photographs of various Pontiac model assembly lines. It begins with a ’63 Tempest and leaves us misty-eyed with a front-end shot of a finished G8 in the final clip. Although the video is somewhat depressing with it mourning the loss of Pontiac (rightfully so!), it also celebrates its life, and the people who built all of our favorite Pontiac models through the decades.
Some of the highlights of the film are the various years of GTOs, Grand Prix, Firebirds and Trans Ams, the first and last Grand Am, along with several shots of the big Catalinas and Bonnevilles being assembled. You also catch a glimpse of the “phoenix” getting stitched into the upholstery for the ’79 10th Anniversary Trans Am. This clip is for all of you hardcore Pontiac fans out there, so enjoy it!
