Video: AutoTrader Helps Duke Boys Replace General Lee During Pursuit

If you were a kid growing up in the very late 1970s and early 1980s, then you know that one of the most popular series on television centered around two cousins who always seemed to get themselves into a mess. Somehow, that orange 1969 Dodge Charger managed to come out of it looking just as great as it ever did, and the Duke boys were usually home for supper with Uncle Jesse and cousin Daisy Duke.

The Dukes of Hazzard was one of those shows that turned the car chase into a series, and as much as we knew the car could never sustain that kind of damage and still look like a show car, we loved it all the same. The General Lee has to be one of the most popular television cars ever, and we’ve seen everything from a Smart Car with the famed “01” on the side to a lifted school bus paying homage to the high flying stock car.

The Dukes of Hazzard made it to the big screen in 2005, continuing the hi-jinx from that fictitious county in Georgia, with a whole new set of characters, including Jessica Simpson playing the part of Daisy Duke, and Johnny Knoxville and Sean William Scott portraying Luke and Bo, respectively.

But now we see the original Duke boys are back in the General Lee, high flying and raising hell for AutoTrader with their new “Find Your Car Your Way” advertising campaign, launched just today. The campaign brings back Tom Wopat and John Schneider as they try to run from a couple of modern Charger police cars. During the pursuit, Bo tells Luke, “We can’t seem to shake the Sheriffs new car,” and Luke has AutoTrader on his smart phone searching for a replacement for the General Lee, and later on Bo’s iPad after he throws Luke’s phone out the window to redirect the Sheriff.

From what we have gathered, there were a total of six cars used: two hero cars supposedly from the original series, two stunt cars, and two jump cars. Filming began a little over a week ago, so they definitely had their chase scene planned out and got it done rather quickly, if our sources are correct about when filming began.

The new campaign from AutoTrader seeks to get your adrenaline going in the best way possible – with a Dukes of Hazzard car chase. The campaign is to show that you can personalize your car shopping experience with tools to suit your own needs that can be used across all devices, allowing searches for the vehicle of your choice based on options, colors, and especially for the Duke boys: to make sure the doors open.

And once you set up your preferences, you get a text alert – a new feature with AutoTrader – informing you that they have found your car. Towards the end, in true Dukes of Hazzard (Hollywood) fashion, they jump over a skiploader in the middle of the road and land, crashing through the plate glass window at a dealership somewhere in the next town where they pick up their car.

We didn’t want to spoil it completely, but you had to know that the replacement would be another Mopar, sporting that popular orange paint and 01 numbering on the door, right? How convenient that SRT had a car with a similar color as the General Lee. Though their replacement isn’t the limited production Viper TA, AutoTrader does, coincidentally, have the Viper TA pictured on their main page.

Now admit it, you watched to the very end of the video, didn’t you? We did too, we just hope they don’t use their new car for some of the same high-flying stunts that were done in the General Lee. At least no Vipers were destroyed in the commission of this video!
