Bud Lindemann, how we love thee. Bud was the host of many a car show in the 1960’s and 70’s, and the show you see here was named “Car & Track.”
It featured a regular review of new performance oriented cars from American manufacturers with Bud’s homespun comments as the narration. In this show they reviewed a brand new 1971 Dodge Challenger with a 383 and a 4-speed and as far as Bud was concerned it was a winner from the get go.
He loved the fact that Dodge engineers had designed it to handle well with either a small block or a big block and that his test driver could drift it through corners with the “power on” with ease. By today’s standards we’d say that this car pushed through the turns like a dump truck, but in 1971 (according to Bud) it was a serious road hugger!
Their speed runs found the Challenger could run 0-30MPH in 2.8 seconds, 0-45 MPH in 4.7 seconds, and 0-70 in 8 seconds flat. The only really aspect of the Challenger that Bud was disappointed in was the brakes as after several high speed braking run the pedal went to the floor and the car spun out. On the styling of the Challenger Bud commented, “The 1971 Challenger looks a lot like the 1970, but is there anything wrong with that?” We couldn’t agree more!
