Back in November, the new 2011 Dodge Charger R/T and Challenger SRT8 392 hit the road for the HEMI Highway Tour. This tour was designed to show off the new Charger and Challenger and visited 40 cities in 40 days at various iconic places important to both America, and Mopar.
The tour recently came to an end, and this video from Red Letter Dodge shows both cars hitting the dyno, and as we’ve reported before, making more power than Dodge is letting on.
For the 2011 model, both the Charger and Challenger have both gotten more power from the Mopar cars. The 2011 Charger R/T with the 5.7 liter HEMI is now rated at 368 horsepower and 395 ft-lbs of torque, and the 2011 Challenger SRT8 392 is rated at 470 horsepower and torque. That’s a substantial bump from last year, at least on paper, but the dynamometer never lies. So back in December the HEMI duo made a stop in Wilmington, North Carolina at National Speed, a speed shop. There, they put both cars on the dyno to see what happens.
The Charger R/T was first, and it put down 327 horsepower and 349 ft-lbs of torque, meaning the engine is actually making closer to 380 horsepower and 400 ft-lbs of torque. As for the Challenger SRT8 392? Well it put down 420 horsepower and 419 ft-lbs of torque, and other outlets have gotten as high as 450 horsepower at the wheels, meaning the new 392 engine is probably making closer to 500 horsepower and torque.
Chrysler isn’t content to fall behind in the muscle car wars, and they are clearly sandbagging a bit by publishing numbers they’ve got to know are low. This way they’re keeping the competition on edge, and it’s clear the Big Three are engaged in a serious power war. There’s a whole lot more Hemi Highway Tour videos over at Red Letter Dodge, so make sure you check them out.
