We upgraded one of our project cars with a modern power steering conversion kit, based on the Delphi steering box. The advantage of the conversion was that we were able to firm up our steering with a modern steering feel. The benefit is that we no longer have 45 year old technology when it comes to the way our car steers.
One of our next installations will be to a 1966 Ford Mustang, and it’s going to be upgraded from manual steering to power steering. Again, we’re calling on Borgeson Universal for their conversion kit, and the kit will provide us with everything that we need to make the conversion.
As you’ll find out in the video above from Sacramento Mustang, there were very few options in the past when converting to power steering. One of the problems with early conversions was finding all of the components; once you found those components the other issue was that you were still dealing with old technology when it came to power steering. An expensive option was to swap to rack and pinion, but that typically requires even more parts – and more money.
Borgeson’s solution is their complete conversion kit that does away with the old-style steering box, and provides a complete, bolt-on kit that will make steering the classic 1965-66 Mustang a much easier chore, especially for parallel parking. With people adding wider tires and wanting to drive their classic cars even more these days, modernizing suspensions, brakes, wheels, and tires is very common. The Borgeson Universal kit will update the steering as well, and provide the confidence that is needed to keep up with the times.
