If you think that all cops are related to Mayberry’s Barney Fife, be careful in Texas. The police in Harris County have proven that they are more than capable of staying up to date with new technology—by using a new Corvette nonetheless.

They recently initiated a “sting”, using a C7 Corvette Stingray’s Performance Data Recorder (PDR) system to the surprise of street racers. This particular C7 Vette is owned by one of the officers in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Each year, the state of Texas hosts the highly anticipated TX2K race, which puts cars in competition on a dyno, and different race track configurations. As with most events, the unsponsored activities can tend to get a little “enthusiastic”, and the police were out to enforce.

This time, the Corvette’s recording systems, which is actually designed to capture the antics of the car’s driver—and which usually end up on YouTube anyway–was able to capture this trio of Corvette enthusiasts testing the capabilities of their cars on the streets of Baytown.

This was frowned upon by the Sheriff’s office, and together with the Corvette’s PDR system, a GoPro camera and a smart phone, the C7’s footage was used to record the after-hours event as the Corvette’s battled it out, all the way up to just over 100 mph.

By the end of the sting, the operation led to the arrest of eight drivers, and as you can see, as we predicted, the PDR footage was published on YouTube. Don’t worry guys, the cops were not picking on just Corvettes. According to Christina Garza, Harris County Sheriff’s Department Media Relations Manager, “This racing initiative was not targeting Corvettes. It was targeting street racing, period. That’s simply the video that we decided to release.”

Along with the C7, officers also used marked police vehicles that were carefully placed, so as not to inhibit street racers (you know, kind of like a speed trap). It’s no secret that street racing is unsafe and illegal. Put two Corvettes side-by-side, and sometimes it’s bound to happen, but please try to keep it on the track or strip.
