Video: General Lee Rises From The South To Go Drifting

General Lee 1For anybody who’s ever had a hankering for fast cars and pretty girls, you no doubt remember the 1980s TV sitcom that made the “South” cool and made “Daisy Duke,” with her super-short shorts and mile-long legs, a cultural icon who would set a jean shorts-wearing fashion statement for many years to come.

That sitcom was none other than the Waylon Jennings-narrated, country bumpkin classic that was part of CBS’ lineup from 1979-85, “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Sporting a bright orange, ’69 Charger named “General Lee,” the Duke boys, played by John Schneider and Tom Wopat, fight the corrupt law of Hazzard County Commissioner, Boss Hogg, portrayed by actor, Sorrell Booke.

An ex-moonshine family, the Dukes, with the help of cousin Daisy (Catherine Bach) and Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle) utilize whatever resources they can, and with the help of mechanic, Cooter Davenport (Ben Jones) and others, the Duke boys manage to straighten-out the shenanigans of Hazzard County, while making the Old South cool.

General Lee 2The ’80s were a time of Pac Man and hairspray, but in the world of Georgia’s own, Hazzard County, things were kept simple. “Dukes of Hazzard” also gave to the decade a muscle car renaissance that was a far stretch from Hasselhoff and his blacked-out, talking Trans Am.

In our featured clip, Hazzard’s own, “General Lee” shows the “rookies” how drifting is really done. The only thing that’s missing from this featured romp is a barrel of moonshine and a slippery dirt road, but for a late-’60s Mopar B-body, this drift session on dry land is more than impressive.

Granted, “Dukes of Hazzard” may never be the television craze from the South that it was during the ’80s, but as long as there is an orange Charger with a war call for a horn and a taste for sideways driving, “General Lee” will continue to hold a distinct place in our car celebrity canon!
