As we reported to you previously, Dodge is taking a driving tour cross country to promote the new 2011 Charger R/T and Challenger SRT8 392. The trip is called the HEMI Highway Tour and kicked off back in November with the plan to cover 30 different cities in 40 days. Planned stops include a number of places of reverence to the Mopar faithful and they recently stopped by what many Mopar lovers would consider as the Holy Grail; The Wellborn Musclecar Museum!
The Wellborn MuscleCar Museum is located in Alexander City, Alabama and was founded by Tim and Pam Wellborn. Tim is a life long Mopar junky and has a special love for Chargers, beginning with the butterscotch ’67 Charger 440 R/T his dad bought new. His collection now features over 70 rare Mopars, and 23 of them are the year and model he loves the most, the 1971 Charger. His collection features 23 of them with HEMI’s under the hood including the first and the last one built! (To put that into an even more impressive perspective, only 63 1971 Dodge Charger R/T’s were made with the HEMI!)
Ironically enough, the museum is located in an old car dealership; a Chevrolet and Cadillac dealership. Each and every car in the collection has been restored to pristine standards, and the Wellborn’s went to great length to get as many Mopar colors into the collection as possible. The museum features several other incredible pieces of Mopar history including one of the eight remaining 426 HEMI cutaway engines (see video below), the uniform that Richard Brickhouse wore in the inaugural Talladega 500, and many other rare piece as well.
