Philanthropy is a funny thing. One can’t help but wonder who it really benefits sometimes. Corporations have used it for ages to get their names in front of the public, and tech barons have opened charitable foundations as a way to differ income and avoid paying the government.
Fast forward to this video from YouTube “star” Andre and check out what’s either a heartfelt hand up or gratuitous click bait by a gangly, goofy social media clown.
For folks of a certain age, this kid hits all the wrong buttons. Lotsa gold jewelry, MC Hammer/Bieber pants and a vocabulary populated with “Yo” and “Bro.”
The premise is to bestow a poor, homeless fellow with a C7 test drive (rented or borrowed from a dealer?) a meal, some new clothes and a night at a nice hotel for him and a friend.
Ultimately, the red C7 Coupe is relegated to almost a cameo role as it’s overshadowed by the gentleman down on his luck.
The whole thing is pretty vapid until the homeless guy tells his tale, and for a brief moment it gets real. Years ago he fled poverty in Arkansas and came to California where he ended up enlisting in the Navy. He married while stationed in Japan and had two daughters but lost track of them years ago…You can see he is in the third act of his life with little to prove and little gumption to protest the way things turned out.
No bling, no excess wealth or stardom desired or needed. Our homeless guy is just an artifact left over from an America that few people remember or care about. Our young host and his dalliances seem even more meaningless against a lifetime of memories and retrospect.
On a cheerier note, for a moment, all that is left back in the mist as our homeless guys pilots Chevrolet’s supercar in the warm California sun.
