The release of Fast Five, the latest installment in the Fast & Furious franchise, might have topped the news charts, but for the Obama bin Laden news, with its estimated $83.6 million opening weekend. Tinsel town theorists are buzzing about why Fast Five took in more than half of all the money spent on movies this weekend. Stay tuned. You’ll be hearing a lot more on this topic.
Just in time for the big screen release, Jay Leno broadcast a new episode of Jay’s Garage, this one featuring Fast Five’s movie car builder, Dennis McCarthy, and a couple of the beauty cars from the movie. The Corvette Grand Sport replica is without a doubt, the poster child for this movie and they go over it in detail. Quite a number of that particular car were made and only a couple survived the shooting.
Additional insight is also given to building the Charger(s) used in the movie. McCarthy says that most of the hate mail he receives is to do with these cars and explains that they only use virtually unrestorable examples, rebuilding them with exterior sheet metal and a coat of paint.
The celebrity pair also take a few minutes at McCarthy’s own garage to check out some of the other cars used in the production. Whether you love or hate the individual pieces, you’ll get a fascinating insight into the car business within the movie business.
