Everybody knows Jay Leno from “The Tonight Show,” but the car guys know him as being the “man with the most toys.” Jay has probably the most diverse collections of classic, exotic and muscle cars in the world, including a jet-powered motorcycle and a few Stanley Steamers. So when he gets the chance to test drive a new car or anything else they throw at him, you can be sure to get his honest opinion on it.
He was presented one of the very first 2008 Dodge Challengers to hit the street, and although it was an automatic, his impression was very positive. This time, he road tested the new ’11 SRT8 with the new Viper transmission and 6.4-liter HEMI equaling 392 cubic inches of muscle. Jay said he is very fortunate to be one of the top members of what he calls, ”The More Money Than Brains Club.” His co-pilot along for the ride was none other than CEO of Dodge, Ralph Gilles.
New for ’11 is the “Green with Envy” paint scheme. While it’s a love-it-or-hate-it hue, the rest of the ’11 is all pure car lust: upgraded suspension with larger Brembo brakes. The new Challenger has cylinder drop out, where it actually shuts down four of the cylinders at highway speeds for improved mileage (up from 19 to 23 mpg). The 392 HEMI puts out 470HP and 470 ft. lbs. of torque at a more usable 3,000 rpms too.
Jay cruised the Challenger smoothly at first, letting everyone know how much better and firmer the road feel was. During the whole time he drove it, he had nothing negative to say about the car and he really let it go! Come along for the ride and watch the video that NBC taped of the entire test drive. Oh and watch it all the way to the end because you don’t want to miss the signature burnout that is classic Jay Leno style!
