If you’ve ever thought that the plot of the 1979 feature film Mad Max may eventually come to light in real life, you’re not alone. But some people are more prepared for this than others. They’re the participants of Wasteland Weekend in the Mojave desert, and one of these men’s preparations are all gold bowtie in origin. Check out Wasteland Weekend master Ron Griffith’s Mad Max-inspired Monte Carlo in the Roads & Rides video above.
On any given day, you’ll probably find Griffith working on broken down vehicles at his California City, California auto repair shop. But when Wasteland Weekend rolls around, a weekend event inspired by the post-apocalyptic movie Mad Max, Griffith can be found front and center in his eclectically built Monstr Carlo.
Now, when most people build a car, they up the performance, even if only in the slightest way. But for the Monstr Carlo, Griffith left its stock 350ci SBC-equipped powertrain alone, complete with the car’s stock automatic transmission. According to Griffith, this and the fact that the car still “runs points”, makes for a vehicle that’s easy to fix and maintain in the desert heat.
While Griffith may not have upped the performance of the Monte Carlo, what he did do to the car was fully outfit it for a post-apocalyptic world. Two large red tanks previously used as fire extinguishers now hold extra fuel and air pressure for the vehicle.
A saw blade-throwing slingshot on the car’s roof acts as a long-distance defense system while the car’s truck bed houses weapons for a closer encounter with enemies. And when it’s time to relax, well, Griffith has that covered too as he outfitted his car with seats that lay all the way back for sleeping and a unique spare tire and axle setup that acts as the bottom of a table Griffith can sit down at and read his “latest edition of Nuclear News.”
This may all seem a bit fantasy-world to some, but the true creativity behind the Monstr Carlo is inspiring and proves that even the most outlandish dream vehicles can be created. What would you add or remove from this Mad Max-inspired ride if you were to build it?
