Not every great car movie is necessarily focused on cars. Take Bullit for example. The green Mustang Steve McQueen drives is without a doubt the most memorable part of that movie. Yet the movie itself was about crime and a determined detective. It just happened to include a really long, really awesome car chase, which is what most of us still remember about it.
Such is the case with Mad Max. A movie about a vengeful police officer is perhaps better remembered for its car. This video found by the Tampa Bay Sportscar Examiner shows a replica Interceptor, complete with a working supercharger and fuel injection system.
If you haven’t yet seen the Road Warrior, go out and do so right now. For the rest of you, a brief history lesson on this famous car. It started life as a 1973 XB GT Ford Falcon coupe, a car made just for Australia. It was essentially the Down Under version of the Mustang. It was remade as a Police Interceptor, which Mad Max would use to chase down a gang of hooligans who kill his wife and child. The car would be revived for the sequel, The Road Warrior.
People all over the world have replicated this car. While the original did not have a working supercharger, the one in this video clearly did. You can hear the audible whine of the power adder, and the engine in this Interceptor is a 351 Cleveland. The guy never jumps on it (he is too busy on the damn phone), but we’ve got to admire his taste in movie cars.
