We like to think America is pretty hardcore, because, well, it is. We’ve got the biggest, most badass army ever imagined, we’ve settled and tamed a harsh and vast continent, and we’ve risen to become arguably the most influential nation on the planet ever. So yeah, America rocks. But there are some much smaller, though still very badass countries that we think deserve some recognition.
Nelson Racing Engines, who build some of the most American motors in the world, posted this video to their YouTube feed of some Icelandic racers wilding out in a sport they call “formula off-road”. It’s the kind of motorsport that requires a special kind of crazy and skills to participate in.
Iceland’s Formula off-road essentially consists of wicked-fast dune buggies scrambling up a dirt hill as fast as possible…without flipping over. It’s crazy, requires a lot of horsepower, and even more cajones to pull off. That’s where NRE’s engines come in, as many of these buggies rock the twin-turbo Ford 427s that NRE is known for. With around 1,600 consistent horsepower, these buggies make short work of the dunes.
At least when they’re driven right, that is. When you’re participating in an event that has you scaling sheer cliffs, flipping over is pretty much guaranteed at some point, and we see a few examples of that. Thankfully the buggies, engines, and drivers are built to withstand the punishment, and its awesome to hear these wicked engines snorting and huffing their way up these Icelandic hills. That’s some kinda crazy alright.
