Video: New Info On The Ford GT Emerges From Leno’s Garage

Built from carbon fiber and boasting a performance-focused 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 producing north of 600 horsepower, the all new Ford GT came out of nowhere to surprise enthusiasts and journalists alike. It’s also the principal focus of the most recent episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, cable edition, which airs every Wednesday night at 10 EST/9 CT on CNBC.

gt-leno-2Raj Nair, Ford’s Chief Technical Officer, came along with the Ford GT to drop some new information on Leno and the rest of us about the Blue Oval-wearing supercar.

The episode can already be watched in its entirety on the CNBC website, with the GT segment beginning around the 15 minute mark. While Nair remains mostly tight-lipped about specifications on the GT, he does let slip that this is a car that is “definitely” under 3,000 pounds. When pressed by Leno to answer it was more than 2,400, Nair stopped short. The implication however seems to be that this could be one of Ford’s lightest production vehicles, as only the Fiesta and Focus come under the 3,000 pound mark in America.

We also learn that not only are the taillights meant to mimic the center-mounted circular exhaust ports, but they’re also exhaust ports themselves. The intercooler exhaust exits through the center of the taillights, an incredibly clever feature that is almost meta in its use of form and function. Alas, because this is still a pre-production car, Leno wasn’t able to get behind the wheel and give it his usual thrashing. However, since the funnyman no doubt purchased one of the second-generation Ford GTs from the 2005-06 vintage, he’s probably on the short-list for owners of the 2017 GT. He’ll have plenty of chances to flog the new Ford GT firsthand.
