First there were Transformers the cartoon. Then came the toys immediately after. Then there was Megan Fox and even more Transformers. Would you believe there’s even more Transformers to come?
In the last Hollywood epic, we had a late-model Camaro (even before the car made it to regular production, no less). Could the latest star of the movie be another iconic Chevrolet? It’s quite possible that it’s a Chevelle SS 396, according to this eagle-eyed enthusiast.
You’re probably thinking, “How the hell can he figure out it’s a Super Sport, much less a Chevelle?” Looking at the passenger side (shown), it could be anything! But if you look at :06, it vaguely looks like a ’68 Chevelle. The black rear trim suggests it’s an SS 396.
Then again, go back to the :08 segment and you’ll notice the car has no vent windows, which would suggest it cannot be a ’68. Certainly the taillights mentioned above are not from a ’69, which are completely different. Maybe it’s not a Chevelle after all? Or it’s a hodge-podge of different years cobbled up by some Hollywood hacker?
Of course, by 1968, the Chevelle SS 396 had superseded the Pontiac GTO as America’s most popular muscle car. The standard motor was rated at 325 horsepower. The first step up was 350 horsepower. Top dog was the solid lifter L78 rated at 375 horsepower. The L89 aluminum head option was available on the Camaro for 1968, but none have been documented to have been built for the Chevelle until 1969.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon doesn’t come out until July 1, 2011. At that moment, we’ll find our answer in 3-D.
