We’re just going to say it; we love third generation (3G) Trans Ams. Sure, you can call them mullet-cars and make Knight Rider references until you’re blue in the face, but everyone here at the powerTV offices loves them –well, some more than others. Your author in particular, is a fan. Of course everyone is well aware of the ’89 Turbo Trans Am, but those were always the exception.
Many often overlook them for their true performance potential just for these simple reasons –tied into the fact that they were equipped with less-than-desirable drivetrains, and dated styling. But any true hot-rodder has the ability and the imagination to turn these underpowered 80s relics into something truly spectacular.
Enter Pal (Polly) Blytt –a Norwegian gearhead who turned what was originally intended as a backup daily driver into the asphalt burning power house it now is today. If you’re not familiar with Polly’s car, you would be a fool to mistake this as another confused teenager’s, big-winged, wannabe tuner car. Nope, that spoiler is mandatory; as Polly’s T/A has produced a top speed of 253mph while on a Mercedes-Benz test track in Germany.
That’s Bugatti Veyron territory –in an ’86 Trans Am. Go ahead, pick your jaw back off of the floor, we won’t tell anybody. That’s the exact reaction everybody in the office had when we heard about it too. Now, before all of you throwbacks still jamming to Poison and thinking a 305 TPI is the hottest thing on the streets go believing that you can build this same car in your garage with a hammer, you better think again!
This achievement comes as a result of an expertly built, F3 ProCharger-blown (with six intercoolers), 540cui. BBC. The result is 1,407rwhp, and for some reason, we feel that dyno-sheet proof just really isn’t necessary in this instance.
Backing all of this power up and putting it to the ground is a heavy-duty version of the ZF 6-speed found in the original ZR-1 Corvette with a modified McLeod bell housing, and a Verktoymekanisk clutch that is fed into a custom “full-floater” 9-inch rear built by Polly Motorsport. An ATB Torsen diff, Verktoymekanisk 31-spline axels, and 2.47 gears are used when Polly wants to take on his top speed runs.
Every component from top to bottom, bumper to bumper has been modified in some way. Even most of the body has been changed; from the fiberglass WS6 knock-off hood, to the lightweight rear hatch glass, and even the headlights sport the lightweight, aftermarket versions you get from Breathless Performance. Even after Polly put the car on the Atkins, the Trans Am still weighs in at a hefty 4,200 lbs, as a result of all of the heavy duty suspension and chassis pieces, not to mention that massive engine that sits under the hood of Mr. Arvid’s car.
Polly’s car is a rolling testament with what can be accomplished when we take the road less traveled, and it literally flips the bird (pun intended) to anyone who ever doubted a 3G’s potential in the first place. For that, we applaud him for showing us American’s how it’s done.
We stumbled upon this video over at protouring.com, and it pretty much speaks for itself. Unfortunately, everybody involved only speaks German, so unless you can interpret Deutsch you’ll have a difficult time understanding, but actions speak louder than words anyway. Enjoy.
