Many moons ago, before they had special lanes for parental chauffeuring, lots of kids rode that big yellow-orange brick every morning and evening to partake in their education. For most kids, there was no alternative but to hop in the public school bus and ride the vinyl, sometimes for more than a half hour each direction.
During the summer months, we pretended that popping in the two sliding latches and dropping the window down would make it cooler inside, but we still sweated our tails off, and the back of our legs stuck to the vinyl like the gum on our shoes.
These days, however, kids get luxury rides to school in mom or dad’s SUV, with suitable A/C or heating, videos, music, games – everything we didn’t get on the school bus. Those days, of course, were also long before the internet, the Walkman, CDs or smart phones.
We had to make do with what we had, as we drew pictures on our paper-bag book covers, and teased the kid with braces, or spit out the window on car windshields, hoping not to get caught by the overweight bus driver who only drove the bus because they couldn’t get a real job. Yeppirs, those were the days.
But how cool would it have been to have a hopped up bus like Gus, here, to get us to our destination each and every morning? Maybe a few cloth seats, tinted windows, custom wheels… and that stance! Maybe the local school districts should take a hint or two from Gus and put some effort into our educational transportation! They could put a couple USB jacks in every seat and let everyone plug in for the trip to school. It might even give the kids something to look forward to every morning and start their day off on a positive note, well, for the cool kids, anyway. Meanwhile, check out Gus in the video above from one of our favorite YouTubers, ScottieD.
