Ah, the 1980’s. We think back on it fondly, but when we see the pictures of ourselves in acid washed jeans and feathered hair we can’t help but feel like idiots.
This promotional video of the ’87 Dodge Daytona conjures up those feelings well.
It’s not that the car is all that bad mind you, but even the most diehard of Mopar fans will admit that the Daytona name best belongs to the aero-nosed Chargers of the ’60’s, not the K-car of the ’80’s.
In pure 1980’s fashion this video is set to Kenny Loggins “Highway to the Danger Zone,” made famous in the 1986 hit movie Top Gun.
In the video we see several versions of the Daytona, most of which are driven by guys with their collars turned up and a penchant for pastel colors.
We’ll have to admit that watching tire smoke from a front wheel drive car does nothing for us, and while they do get the tail to slide a few times it’s only due to the fact that the e-brake was working well.
They also race the Daytona against a Nissan Turbo Z and an Trans Am. Since the Daytona featured a 2.2-liter turbocharged inline-4 with 174hp we’ll let you assume how the race likely turned out.
Just for the record, we have a terrific article on the history of the Dodge Charger and Daytona here, and it’s worth a read. It’ll leave you feeling a lot better about the word “Daytona.”
