When Chrysler tried to sell and kill the Dodge Viper, it raised the ire of many sports car fans the world over. Thankfully, Chrysler’s overlords at Fiat saw the value in salvaging the Viper as a halo car for the newly-formed SRT brand. And even we must admit, under the Italian’s stewardship, the 2013 SRT Viper has emerged looking and sounding better than ever.
The Viper’s racing pedigree hasn’t been forgotten either, and Chrysler has made it clear that the Viper GTS-R will be competing in a wide variety of motorsports events. As if to hammer this point home, Chrysler has released this short video of the Viper tearing up the track at Virginia International Raceway, or VIR.
While Chrysler hasn’t given the press an official debut date, the Pentastar has promised that the Viper GTS-R will make its racing debut at the American Le Mans Series this year. The ALMS is already three races into the season, though the battle royale at VIR isn’t scheduled until September. Could Chrysler be dropping a hint here?
That might be the case, for this brief video conjures up the picture of a very fierce competitor, one that will give other racers a run for their money. The Viper will keep its 8.4 liter V10 engine for the series, albeit by wearing a serious restrictor to keep horsepower in line with its competitors. But we doubt even that will be enough to reign in this snake.
