We’ve talked before about the cool products that the folks at Gear Vendors put out for the motorsports public; their Under/Overdrive units are legendary within the industry and are used in many different applications from fast street cars like Denny Terzich’s Drag Week-winning Camaro all the way up to Bonneville land-speed record-smashing machines. The Gear Vendors planetary gearbox adapts to your existing transmission to provide an additional 0.78:1 gear to the existing ratios. The system also allows you to split each gear – making a three-speed transmission into a six-speed, and a four-speed into an eight-speed. There are many advantages to having an under/overdrive system in a car, and in this neat video we get a chance to see how the Gear Vendors products are made.
They have an amazing array of machinery inside the building; as their gearbox requires many different parts and pieces that need to be machined in steps throughout the process, it’s interesting to get an inside look in the plant. One of the grinding machines measures tolerances in millionths of an inch and is temperature-compensated, ensuring an exact fit once final machining is performed.
With over 31 years in business, the Gear Vendors team has plenty of experience within their scope of product manufacturing. The wide array of machinery is capable of taking raw castings and turning them into a product that can handle four-digit horsepower and look good while doing it. Having a chance to watch CNC machinery operation is a small slice of gearhead heaven. Hopefully you enjoyed the video as much as we did.
