We’ll admit upfront that whenever the chance to do a little news on the General Lee pops up, we jump on it like a possum does to a gumbush. The General Lee was merely a stock orange ’69 Dodge Charger in disguise, but when it wore it’s battle dress on TV in the 1980’s little kids everywhere fell in love with it.
It was the best friend of the Duke cousins Bo and Luke, and was quite possibly the equivalent of Superman on 4-wheels. It could drift any corner, outrun any car, drive on 2 wheels at ease, and jump at will, all without putting a scratch on itself. Unfortunately, only TV magic left the General invulnerable as in reality over 300 Dodge Charger’s gave their lives to keep the Dukes on CBS for seven years.
The General Lee that you see here is a survivor of the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard movie. It was one of the “sling” driverless jump cars that was launched pneumatically into the air, and true Dukes geeks will remember this car from the huge 170 foot jump onto the Atlanta interstate about half way through the movie. This car actually survived three different jumps, and while a lot of that credit goes to the huge amount of frame bracing the car was given, we know deep down inside that it’s mostly due to the fact that it was a tough ‘ol Dodge wearing the right color of paint!
