In recent comparisons, the Challenger has proven not to be the fastest statistically out of America’s three current fastest production muscle cars. But that doesn’t mean that Chrysler has sacrificed horsepower with the SRT8 392, it means that Dodge has stuck to a certain standard of durability even in the construction of their high-performance models.
The most premium-optioned of the new-gen Challengers, the SRT8 392 boasts a 470-horse, 6.4 HEMI that propels the SRT to 60 from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds. Though not as rapid as the potent GT500 Stang and the 580-horse ZL1 Camaro, the Challenger SRT8 392 can be had for a considerably lower price range.
But big horsepower for a reasonable buck is not the only part of Mopar’s formula for success. According to Dodge SRT Brand and Motorsports president and CEO, Ralph Gilles, this year’s “Yellow Jacket” cosmetic package was introduced for the SRT392 with the Mopar enthusiast in mind, “The Stinger Yellow paint and interior accents speak directly to the performance enthusiast who appreciates a memorable and collectible color that helps deliver even more excitement and exclusivity.”
Based on the SRT, our featured Yellow Jacket Challenger’s shade of “Stinger” yellow paint stays true to the Mopar motif, while the black interior’s yellow accents reinforce the retro, Chrysler muscle theme that the car seems to be ultimately aiming for.
The ’12 Yellow Jacket also holds an important place in the timeline of Mopar performance, as the concept is based on an original “Yellow Jacket” show car that started to appear in late 1969 at various auto exhibits. Based on a ’70 Challenger, the original Yellow Jacket featured a 426 HEMI and other features such as a custom front spoiler, wider tires and heavier-duty suspension that were among Dodge’s “Scat Pack” performance options.
Only a limited number of Yellow Jacket Challengers were sold in the U. S. this year, but our featured video is as close to the car as you can possibly get without actually having to buy!
