Say what? Chevrolet Corvette engineer Tadge Juechter has announced they aren’t developing a mid-engined version of America’s supercar.

Hmmmm. In a recent interview, one of the talking heads asked Juechter the 411 on the mid-engine Corvette.  “I’ll have to check that out, because I know no such car exists,” he said.

Huh? Is he bluffing? Maybe. But like we said previously, the new C7 is a tough act to follow. According to Juechter, the packaging required to move the engine mid-ship sacrifices too much daily drivability as compared to a conventional C7.

This comes after several spy shots bounced around the internet in January of this year. If you’ve followed the Corvette over its long production run, you know we Vette fans have “scares” like this every few years. Some breathless headlines with an artist rendering and the public goes crazy.

Last sighting was different though. Instead of a render we saw a Holden faced mule that was running around for everyone to see. Add to this the arrival of the Ford GT and you’d think the elusive unicorn mid-engine Corvette was truly on the way.

Or is this a marketing maneuver?  Ford was able to cloak the GT from the snoopy auto press and deliver a megaton bomb when they pulled the wraps at the Detroit International Auto Show at the beginning of the year.

Maybe Chevy and GM want the same “shock and awe” intro and by playing dumb they can get a big buzz when the car materializes. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
